Cover Chip
How come some graphics card is just a thin chip and some has cover and thick, looks like external drive.?
I searched how to install 3D graphic cards into my pc and they all are installing thin green chip. What I’ve seen in online shopping search, they all have cover and look like external drive. If it’s not a chip, how do you install it ? It won’t fit in the slot of the graphic cards.
High end graphics cards usually take up 2 slots. Because they put out a lot of heat, they need big heatsinks to be installed on the GPU chips. These heatsinks are usually hidden underneath the plastic covering, or as techies prefer to call it, the plastic shroud.
Its not just there to look nice (although it mainly is) it also serves a cooling purpose.
You will also notice such dual slot GPU’s also have a very peculiar fan or blower that sucks in air from one end of the video card and blows it out from the rear vent (out to the back of your computer), as opposed to the lower end, single slot ones which have fans blowing down directly onto a small heatsink that is attached to the GPU chip.
Why is the dual slot design better? because it prevents the hot air from being re-circulated into the case, since it exhausts air outside. Hot air goes out, cold air comes in.
