Does skill matter at a poker table when everyone else is a donkey?
I attended “casino night” for my wife’s college the other day, and wound up playing poker. NLHE, blinds 1/2. The strange thing is that NOBODY at the table knew what they were doing. Two of the girls even asked for the card that ranks the hands! Consequently I saw some truly ridiculous plays. One girl had the stone nuts and checked it down. She hit her flush on the turn and didn’t do a thing with it. Another girl had aces full and was really unsure whether to call a min bet on the river! Meanwhile people were calling with absolute rags, and generally turning the game into a slot machine. I busted out when I flopped the nuts, went all in, and had some girl call me who needed runner runner (which she hit). I’ve heard and seen that you can’t bluff a bad player. But when all 8 or 9 of your opponents barely know the game is there any skill involved at all? Or can you only sit back, wait for a monster, and hope you don’t get drawn out on?
It’s not that there’s no skill involved. It’s just that when you’re up against players that bad, playing the right hands and judging their value becomes the predominant skill. Bluffing and making fancy plays is not necessary, but you still have to be able to tell if your hand is worth betting with.
In general, you never really need to push all in before the river. If you think you’re got the best hand (but not the nuts), just make medium bets to the river. To this type of player, the amount you bet doesn’t make much of a difference. If they’re going to call, they’ll call with any size bet, and if they’re going to fold, they’ll fold to a min-bet. Don’t go broke without the nuts, but at the same time, don’t be afraid to bet with top pair. You’re going to get called down a lot with a little pair or ridiculous draw.
The hand you lost on was obviously just bad luck. But if you had made medium bets to the river, you may have been able to get away from the hand when she jumped out of her chair on the river. Seeing the right play is easy in retrospect though.
